SHAKTHI - INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE
NETWORK FOR GENDER EQUALITY IN THE ICT SECTOR
The main aim of the project is to provide analytical tools (information
exchange channels) to help policy-makers, designers and other
stakeholders to improve their efforts for getting more women integrated
into the design and use of the technologies of the Information
Society in India. This project is addressed to civil society in
general and to women and ICT sector in particular. With it, we
wish to create links and joint ventures between a cross section
of entities in the fields of enterprise and university, by promoting
the exchange of best practices in the field of 'gender equality
at work'.
Specifically our activities would be:
- Case studies on inclusion efforts by public, commercial and
voluntary players.
- Studies about implications for public and commercial interests,
including the efforts of educators and the design and development
strategies of commercial providers.
- New set of communities of users of the obtained findings.
Objectives
The main goal of the project is to provide analytical tools in
order to help policy-makers, designers and stakeholders in general
to improve their efforts in involving more women integrated into
the design and use of the technologies of the Information Society
In India. We want to create information exchange channels between
India and the world that permits to raise awareness of the rest
of the world's gender equality principles at work, in India.

The
general objective is to study and analyse public and commercial
initiatives to include women in information and communication
technologies (ICTs) and open collaborative ways with Indian organizations
to transfer these best practices and experiences. Also finding
common ground between both geographical areas to improve the understanding
of gender quality at work as a key point in business ethics, around
the world.
The final objective lies in a scope of specific objectives
as the following ones:
1. To build a knowledge base of initiatives and indicators of
women's inclusion in ICTs, both from India and across the globe.
2. To conduct case studies of public efforts to include women
in ICTs in education, national and local government.
3. To conduct case studies of all private initiatives to include
women in ICTs, encompassing
- Voluntary initiatives and
- The efforts of commercial players.

4. To study the experience of women using these initiatives.
5. To analyse the theoretical and policy implications:
- To analyse the various inclusion strategies and their effectiveness
in different contexts in order to develop better theoretical
understanding of inclusion and the relationship between inclusion
and employment of women within ICT;
- To identify new and emerging developments which open up new
opportunities for inclusion initiatives;
- To explore the implications for public policy and commercial
design/development strategies.
6. To disseminate findings and discuss their implications with
relevant policy communities, special interest groups, commercial
and technical players and academia interested in these issues
with a view of establishing permanent institutional and entrepreneurial
dialogues on this subject.
